Whirlpool to cut nearly 350 jobs at Amana, affecting more than a quarter of plant staff

AMANA, Iowa — Whirlpool Corp. announced a round of layoffs at its Amana manufacturing plant that will just under 350 workers, more than a quarter of the facility’s approximately 1,500 employees.
The job cuts are scheduled to take effect March 9. The company said additional reductions are possible in the second quarter as it continues to assess operational needs.
In a statement, Whirlpool described the move as part of a broader, multi-year modernization plan aimed at transforming and diversifying operations at the Amana plant.
“As the only U.S.-based manufacturer of major kitchen and laundry appliances, Whirlpool Corporation’s facility in Amana, Iowa, is a vital part of the company’s U.S. manufacturing footprint,” the company said. “Today’s announcement is part of a multi-year modernization plan that will transform the plant into a dynamic operation that will continue to produce best-in-class refrigerators, while also incorporating warehousing, parts production and sub-assembly work. This transformation is necessary to position the Amana plant for continued stability and success. We are committed to supporting affected employees through this transition.”
The plant will continue to manufacture several refrigerator models and is expected to take on a broader role in Whirlpool’s U.S. manufacturing operations, the company said.
Recent changes have phased out older refrigeration production lines. Over the next several years, Whirlpool plans to invest in the facility to expand operations and upgrade the types of products manufactured there.
Iowa’s News Now did ask if any of these employees may have an opportunity to be recalled. A Whirlpool spokesman said, ”The likelihood is low, however all union employees maintain recall rights between 2 to 5 years (recall duration is based on tenure/seniority). They would also be recalled based on seniority if that happened.”
The company said it will provide affected employees with on-site human resources support, access to an employee assistance program and guidance on unemployment benefits through Iowa Workforce Development.
