Hawthorn home with family link to Barry Humphries hits the market

43 Brook St, Hawthorn, has hit the market for the first time since it was sold by the brother of the late Barry Humphries, who played Dame Edna Everage.

A storeyed past with links to comedic legend Dame Edna Everage, a gate in the back fence that opens to a popular local reserve and classic Victorian charm combine at 43 Brook St.

For 21 years the block-fronted Hawthorn address was owned by the late Michael Humphries, brother to legendary stage performer Barry Humphries – better known as Dame Edna Everage.

Humphries, a librarian at Melbourne High School, lived next door to the home and bought it to ensure the three-bedroom house wouldn’t be developed.

In a nostalgic twist, it was then sold to a former student of his school who remembered him as a “remarkable individual”.

It’s since been a happy home for their growing family.

The kitchen has been modernised, while the home’s living and dining rooms have vistas out to the immaculate gardens.

The home’s kitchen is fit for modern needs, but could be updated if desired.

A gate in the back fence opens out to the popular reserve at the rear of the home.

Natural light brightens most of the home’s rooms.

The north-facing back yard has a stand-alone garage, a side drive way provides even more off-street parking and a patio provides space for summer entertaining.

The home on a wide block is impeccably located with Sunny Smart Reserve accessed via a gate in the rear fence, local cafes and walking trails a short stroll away, as well as an array of sought after private schools.

Kay & Burton’s Rebecca Edwards is handling the sale and says the $2.4m-$2.6m home is in “one of the hottest positions we are dealing with in Boroondara”, and would appeal as immediately liveable, with scope for the next owners to put their own stamp on it.

A lounge room offers a cosy perch for a night in.

Dark floors juxtapose the bathroom’s light and bright aesthetic.

Spacious bedrooms come with shutters and eye-catching built-in wardrobe doors.

The home will be auctioned on February 25 at 6.30pm.
