PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland freshman Joel Foxwell set two new Pilot single season records and erupted for a career-high 35 points, but the Pepperdine Waves came away with a 95-87 victory in West Coast Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night at the Chiles Center.
The Pilots (12-16, 5-10 WCC) shot 62 percent from the field and outscored the Waves (8-20, 3-12) 48-24 in the paint, but Pepperdine drilled 16 three-pointers and had a 35-22 rebounding margin to pull off the road upset.
Foxwell led four Pilots in double figures with 35 points and eight assists. The Melbourne, Australia native broke the single-season program record for assists previously held by Alec Wintering (187) during the 2015-16 campaign. He finished the game at 193 for the season. Foxwell also eclipsed the freshman single season scoring record set by Austin Rapp a season ago (428). He needed 20 points entering the game to pass Rapp’s record.
Jermaine Ballisager Webb was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, including three three-pointers, and finished with 16 points, while Garrett Nuckolls added 11 points and seven assists for the Pilots.
Aaron Clark was unconscious for Pepperdine drilling 7 of 8 three-pointers and finished with 29 points. Javon Cooley added 21 points and knocked down five three-pointers.
How it Happened
Portland appeared to have control of the game early racing out to a 9-0 lead and forcing an early Pepperdine timeout. The margin grew to 30-14 following a Ballisager Webb layup before the Waves used an 11-0 run capped by a pair of Clark triples to pull within 30-25. Clark hit two more three-pointers and then a layup from Pavle Stosic gave Pepperdine their first lead of the game at 33-32. The Waves took a 45-43 lead into halftime.
The second half featured six ties and six lead changes over the first six minutes before the Waves used a 10-0 run highlighted by two more threes from Clark to go up 68-59. Portland would cut the margin to 89-87 with 2:23 left after a steal and dunk from Foxwell. The Pilots missed a three-point attempt to tie the game on the next possession and then Styles Phipps buried a clutch triple late in the shot clock to put Pepperdine up 93-87 and the Pilots were unable to make any headway the rest of regulation.
