Why ‘Smiling Friends’ is ending after 3 seasons in shock announcement

The animation world saw a stunner on Thursday night when Smiling Friends creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel announced the show would be ending after three seasons.
Arguably the most popular animated show for adults to hit televisions since Rick and Morty, Smiling Friends has grown to be a cultural behemoth and one of the flagship animated programs of the decade.
Q&A: Smiling Friends‘ Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel on new season
In a thoughtful audio message to fans via Adult Swim, Cusack and Hadel explained that a sense of burnout and a feeling of finality both played a role in the show ending earlier than expected.
The duo did reveal two new episodes will arrive in April, presumably the two last in the show’s history. However, Cusack and Hadel left the door open to return to the show if they felt so moved to come back to it.

Smiling Friends ending so early is a huge, huge bummer. However, it sounds like Cusack and Hadel are at peace with their decision. Here’s hoping they revisit these characters in some way, shape or form one day in the future.
