Actor and TVK chief Vijay’s wife files for divorce, alleges affair with actor

Actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, has filed a petition for divorce seeking to end their 27 years of marriage. The couple, who married in August 1999, have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha.
The legal proceedings are based on specific provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allow a spouse to seek divorce for reasons such as adultery and cruelty.
- According to the petition, Sangeetha, 48, alleged that Vijay, 51, was involved in an extramarital relationship with a female actor. The petition claimed that Sangeetha, in 2021, discovered that Vijay “was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress.”
- The petition further noted that despite assurances from Vijay that the relationship would end, it continued without any sign of remorse.
- The document also stated that Vijay not only excluded Sangeetha from his social and professional life, but also “continued to travel abroad and attend public events with the said actress. The actress regularly posted photographs of these outings on social media. The respondent neither denied nor objected to these posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them.” Sangeetha claimed that these posts “caused repeated humiliation to her and their children.”
- Moreover, the petition also noted that Vijay withdrew facilities previously enjoyed by Sangeetha, and “imposed financial restrictions including curtailment of her free movement.”
- Sangeetha stated that Vijay’s “continued adulterous conduct and repeated social media controversies” in 2024 caused her severe mental torture. She added that their marriage has effectively ceased to exist and now survives only on paper. According to her, the relationship is incapable of revival and offers her nothing but “mental agony, indignity, humiliation and suffering.”
These details became central to the grounds for divorce put forward by Sangeetha, as outlined under Section 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) of the Special Marriage Act.
The Special Marriage Act, 1954, allows for divorce if a spouse is found to have committed adultery or has treated the other party with cruelty. Sangeetha’s petition cites both these legal grounds in the ongoing proceedings. The matter is currently before the District Court, with the outcome yet to be determined.
Sangeetha, the daughter of a Tamil industrialist, was once a devoted fan of Vijay before the two married on August 25, 1999. Their wedding was a grand affair, celebrated with both Hindu and Christian rituals.
