Buddy Guy Makes NPR Tiny Desk Debut

CHICAGO — Buddy Guy’s illustrious musical career has spanned nearly seven decades — and at 89 years old, the bluesman continues to achieve career milestones.
Fresh off his ninth Grammy win this month and a North American tour announcement — which kicks off this summer in celebration of his 90th birthday — Guy also made his debut Friday on the internet’s favorite miniature music stage.
Guy appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk, performing a 21-minute, four-song set with career-spanning hits like his 1991 classic “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues” and 1970 tune “Hoochie Coochie Man.”
Musician and actor Miles Caton joined the blues legend about nine minutes into the performance. The duo played “Travelin’” and “I Lied to You” from the 16-time Oscar-nominated film “Sinners”; they both appear in the film and worked on the soundtrack.
“Buddy Guy displays a youthful spirit during his Tiny Desk that makes you question if he really turns 90 this year,” per the NPR YouTube description. “Once the music starts, his subtle speaking voice transforms into a mighty instrument, demanding your attention. … But what kind of blues show would this be if they stuck to the script? Guy takes detours into the history of the blues, playfully challenging Caton to keep up.”
Guy was also joined by Dan Souvigney on piano, Ric Hall on guitar, Orlando Wright on bass and Pooky Styx on drums.
