International Women’s Day vigil on Sunday

ORONO — There will be a vigil for International Women’s Day in Orono on Sunday, March 8 from noon to 1 p.m. Organized by a local activist group in solidarity with the global International Women’s Day movement.
International Women’s Day is a global day of celebration marking the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for equal rights for all. The first International Women’s Day was organized by the Socialist Party of New York in 1909. Two years later the first international women’s day was celebrated by over a million people in Europe. Since then it has been recognized around the world.
On Sunday we will gather in front of the University of Maine Credit Union (15 Main St.) and walk together across the Stillwater River Bridge. Please join us as we celebrate women’s achievements and commit ourselves to gender equality for all. Bring your family and appropriate signs and dress warmly.
