Two flights cancelled as winter storm hits the Sault

The Sault Ste. Marie Airport lists inbound and outgoing flights to Toronto as cancelled this afternoon, with all other flights still classed as ‘on time’
UPDATE:
Both Porter Airlines and Air Canada cancelled their afternoon flights from Sault Ste. Marie, as well as their night arrivals in the city amid the major winter storm.
Tomorrow morning’s departures for both airlines have also been cancelled “since there is no plane here to depart,” said Terry Bos, president and CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation.
Flights appear to be scheduled as normal for tomorrow afternoon.
“Both Air Canada and Porter are showing tomorrow afternoon’s turn as scheduled,” Bos said in an email to SooToday.
“It would appear that we are set to lose two Air Canada arrivals and departures and two Porter arrivals and departures.”
Original story:
Two flights have been cancelled at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport this afternoon as the city braces for what could be the worst winter storm of the season.
Per the airport’s website, an inbound flight from Toronto set to arrive at 3:57 p.m. has been cancelled, as well as an outgoing flight to Toronto set for 4:35 p.m.
As of 4 p.m., the other four arrivals and two departures scheduled at the airport are still classed as ‘on time’ on the airport website, though officials cautioned delays may take place in a social media post last night.
Travellers should expect travel disruptions, allow extra travel time, prepare for changing visibility on roads and check flight status with their airlines before heading to the airport, the post said.
“This storm has the potential to be one of the most significant snowfall events of the season for the region,” the post said.
Sault Ste. Marie is under an Orange Warning for a winter storm that’s expected to dump 40-80 cm of snow on the city through Sunday and into Monday.
Northeasterly wind gusts may reach 70 to 80 km/h, bringing near zero visibility amid heavy and blowing snow.
Earlier this winter, persistent blizzard conditions kept all but one flight grounded at the local airport during a six-day stretch over the Christmas holidays.
