Bell Canada is planning to start construction this spring on what it says will be Canada’s largest AI data centre, located on the outskirts of Regina.

According to a news release, the 300 MW data centre will bring about $12 billion in revenue to the province’s economy, adding 800 temporary construction jobs and 80 full-time jobs at the facility once it starts operating in 2027.

The telecom giant filed documents with the RM of Sherwood earlier this year to re-zone a 160-acre parcel of land just south of the city limits near the University of Regina, but few details were available at the time.

The application included plans for “300 plus” parking stalls and a SaskPower substation to provide the power needed to operate the data centre and additional buildings related to the project.

That original rezoning application raised concern in the community with some worried  the AI data centre would strain local water and power supplies.

Bell Canada’s news release said the data centre includes a partnership with the George Gordon First Nation as well as a working relationship with Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the University of Regina.

Bell Canada is holding a joint news conference with the Government of Saskatchewan Monday morning at Innovation Saskatchewan Research and Technology Park in Regina.
