Inquest to open into death of boxing legend Ricky Hatton | ITV News

An inquest into the death of former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton will be held.

The hearing at Stockport Coroner’s Court on 20 March follows the sudden passing of the 46-year-old, whose death left the sporting world in shock.

A pre-inquest hearing previously heard that the former boxer, known to fans as “The Hitman”, was last seen by his family on 12 September, appearing to be “well.”

But concerns were raised the following day when he failed to attend a scheduled event.

On Sunday, 14 September 2025, his manager, Paul Speak, arrived at Hatton’s home in Hyde, Tameside, to collect him for a flight to Dubai. He found the former champion unresponsive.

Hatton earned the title of “The People’s Champion,” drawing tens of thousands of fans to Las Vegas during the height of his career.

Despite his success, Hatton was famously candid about his battles outside the ring, speaking candidly about his struggles with mental health and issues with drink and drugs.

At the time of his death, his family insisted he was “in a good place” and was looking forward to the future, with his bags already packed for a planned comeback fight in Dubai this December.

Thousands of fans lined the streets of Manchester for his funeral at the Cathedral in October 2025.

The service was attended by icons of sport and music, including Liam Gallagher, Wayne Rooney, and Tyson Fury.
