Emmy Award-nominated host Ken Jennings is now known across his globe as the face of Jeopardy!, but he probably would never have imagined he would become a game show icon growing up. As a child, he lived in South Korea and Singapore for over a decade for his father’s job. During this time, he stayed connected to American TV through Jeopardy! watches every afternoon. His passion for knowledge continued into adulthood, when he captained the quiz bowl squad as a student at Brigham Young University.

By 2004, Jennings rose to fame when competing on Jeopardy! for the first time. Working as a software engineer in Salt Lake City, he was able to benefit from a new rule which allowed competitors to continue on the show indefinitely, which led to him making Jeopardy! history.

Jennings had a 74-game winning streak and took home over $2.5 million. In the years since, he’s competed on other game shows, including the Jeopardy! “Greatest of All Time” competition, which he won against notable competitors Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer in 2020. He’s also appeared on popular series such as Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?.

Jennings became the permanent host of Jeopardy! after Alex Trebek’s passing, bringing a new perspective as a former competitor himself. “I hope it calms people down because I know from experience—it’s very daunting to be placed into that high-pressure cooker environment the very first time, probably, that you’re on TV,” he told Mental Floss last year.

Today, Jennings remains passionate about trivia, creating Kennections quizzes for Mental Floss for about a decade and playing The New York Times’ rival “Connections” game every night with his wife. He continues to prove his eclectic tastes—from Victorian novels to ‘80s pro wrestlers—further positioning himself as the king of trivia.
