Producing is Nacelle, the Burbank-based production and distribution company known for such TV docs as The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us. For the new project, Nacelle has partnered with Bob Gale (Co-Writer, Co-Producer Back to the Future) and filmmaker Stillman (Igniting the Spark – The Story of Magic: The Gathering).

In addition to Fox and Zemeckis, the documentary includes interviews with Gale, and Broadway cast members Casey Likes, Roger Bart, Liana Hunt, Jelani Remy, Nathaniel Hackmann, Mikaela Secada and Merrit David Janes. Also on hand: the musical’s producer Colin Ingram, director John Rando and production designer Tim Hatley.

Brian Volk-Weiss, Bob Gale, Cisco Henson, and Brian Stillman serve as Executive Producers of the doc.

“Having Back to the Future the Musical playing to sold out houses around the world is a future I never could have predicted,” said Gale. “I thought getting the movie off the ground was insanely difficult, but getting the musical version on stage was even harder, and this documentary really captures what we all went through.”

Back To The Future was adapted for the stage by the movie’s creators Gale and Zemeckis and features original music by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard alongside hit songs used in the film such as “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel” and “Back in Time.”

Back to the Future: The Musical won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical for the West End production. The 2023-2025 Broadway staging received two Tony Award nominations (for scenic design and for featured actor Bart).

Following its five year West End run, Back to the Future: The Musical is touring the United States, with other productions in Tokyo and Hamburg with future stops planned for Edinburgh, Paris and other cities around the world.

Director Stillman’s other doc credits include Plastic Galaxy: The Story of Star Wars Toys and Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Dungeons & Dragons and he contributed to Nacelle’s The Toys That Made Us, The Movies That Made Us, The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek, and Icons Unearthed.
