Northbound traffic on Highway 5 appears to be stopped on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.

The Coquihalla Highway is now closed in both directions between Merritt and Hope.

Southbound lanes are closed between the Zopkios brake check and Mine Creek Road exits due to a vehicle incident, while northbound lanes are closed between the Zopkios and Portia exits “due to non-compliant commercial vehicles at mandatory chain up location.”

DriveBC is advising motorists detours are available via Highway 1 or by Highway 5A to Highway 3.

Drivers are also being told there is limited visibility because of heavy snowfall and to expect delays.

The Coquihalla Highway is closed to motorists heading north between Hope and Merritt.

According to DriveBC, the closure is due to “non-compliant commercial vehicles at mandatory chain up location.”

UPDATE: 8:25 p.m.

DriveBC is advising drivers travelling northbound on Highway 5 to expect major delays near the Coquihalla Summit.

DriveBC said motorists should expect delays northbound between the Portia chain up, about three kilometres south of the summit, and the Zopkios rest area.

“Delays are due to non-compliant commercial vehicles at mandatory chain up location,” an online update reads.

Drivers are also being told to expect compact snow and slippery and slushy sections between the Portia and Coldwater Road exits.

UPDATE: 6:29 p.m.

The Coquihalla Highway has been cleared after several spun-out semis caused delays earlier Wednesday, but motorists are being advised wintery conditions remain.

Traffic is once again flowing on the route Wednesday evening. A long line of traffic could be seen backed up on the highway’s northbound lanes on DriveBC webcams earlier today.

DriveBC is advising drivers to expect compact snow and slippery and slushy sections between the Portia and Coldwater Road exits.

Snow is causing delays for drivers along the Coquihalla Highway.

​Drive BC advises travellers to expect delays for northbound traffic in the Box Canyon area due to several spun-out semis.

​A long line of traffic can be seen backed up along the route on Drive BC webcams. Crews are on the scene trying to clear out the stuck trucks.

​While there are no current weather alerts along Highway 5, drivers are being told to expect slippery and slushy sections between the Portia and Coldwater Road exits.
