Goalie fight! See Devils’ Markstrom square off with Rangers’ Shesterkin

New food at New Jersey Devils games this season

The Devils kick off their home hockey season on Oct. 16. See the new additions to the concession lineup here.

Both teams may be playing out the string of the regular season, but the rivalry between the Devils and Rangers is still heated.

Those tensions certainly boiled over on March 31 at Madison Square Garden, as the Rangers led the Devils 4-1 midway through the third period.

With a New Jersey powerplay winding down, Devils forward Paul Cotter ran over Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin while driving towards the net. Cotter was assessed a goaltender interference penalty, but the Blueshirts took exception to the contact with Shesterkin.

In the midst of the scrum, Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom flew down the ice. He took off his mask, glove and blocker and challenged Shesterkin. The Russian netminder obliged, and the two squared off for a rare goalie fight:

Shesterkin ended the tilt on top of Markstrom, and the two were then separated as the scrum broke up.

Unfortunately, these two teams do not play again this season. As if the Hudson River rivalry needed any more fuel, this raise the tension even more between the two sides when they meet again next year.
