Teenager and 70-year-old innocent driver killed in multi-vehicle crash in Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) — A violent four-vehicle crash in Anaheim left two people dead early Tuesday morning — a 14-year-old high school freshman and an innocent driver.
The collision happened just before 1 a.m. at Anaheim Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue.
According to Anaheim police, officers spotted a silver Infiniti sedan driving erratically around 12:45 a.m. When officers tried to catch up with the car, the driver turned off his lights and took off.
“One of our officers saw a silver Infiniti sedan driving erratically in the area of Cypress Street and Harbor Boulevard, which is just a couple blocks around the corner,” said Sgt. Matt Sutter. “Our officers tried to catch up to that vehicle to conduct an enforcement stop, and the driver turned off his lights, took off, and we never actually caught up to the vehicle.”
Investigators noted that they never officially initiated pursuit, and moments after they lost sight of the Infiniti, the driver ran a red light at the intersection, crashing into three other cars.
One of the vehicles was a red Toyota Camry belonging to 70-year-old great-grandfather Alberto Viveros, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several of Viveros’ family members gathered at the scene. They said the father of 12 and grandfather of 30 was driving home from work at the time of the crash.
Tragically, his family says two of Viveros’ daughters found out about what happened when they drove by the crash scene and recognized his car.
“They drove by the accident. He told them that he was going to text them when he was home. Never got the message. They drove past, saw everything. Then her other sister that lives with him came by to check it out, and it was his car,” said Laura Reyes, Viveros’ niece. “They came across the accident, they saw the car, recognized it. He wasn’t home, no message was ever received.”
“The car had his lights off. He didn’t see it… he didn’t see it coming, so what we hope is that he didn’t suffer much, because he really didn’t deserve it,” said Gilberto Acosta, one of Viveros’ grandsons. “We are just hoping that we can get him justice and get him to rest in peace.”
The other victim killed in the crash was 14-year-old Anaheim High School freshman Andrew Sanchez, who was in the front passenger seat of the Infiniti, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
“Great kid, very outgoing. He was funny. He always brought good vibes to everyone, and he was always helpful and kind,” said Frankie Flores, a friend of the teen.
“He was my best friend. I knew him since kindergarten. He was a cool kid, but I don’t know, maybe he made the wrong decision that night or something. I don’t know what honestly happened,” another friend, Nathan Tello, said.
The 19-year-old driver of the Infiniti is in critical condition. Two other teenage girls who were in the backseat were hospitalized, but are said to be recovering.
Anaheim police say they are still working to determine why the driver of the Infiniti fled, and if drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.
There were a total of four cars involved. Police say three other people suffered minor injuries.
Anaheim police say they are reviewing video of the crash that was captured by city cameras in the area.
Viveros’ family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover his funeral costs.
Sanchez’s family is accepting Zelle donations to Kenia Sanchez at 714-203-4357.
