Hurricanes land QB commit for Class of 2027. What to know about Israel Abrams

The Miami Hurricanes have their quarterback for the Class of 2027, as Israel Abrams on Friday announced his oral commitment to UM.

Abrams made the announcement on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show. He chose Miami over Auburn, Florida State, Kentucky and Purdue.

“I think that that’s a place that I can pursue my dreams and do something I want to do, which is just win,” Abrams said on the show. “Win games for my teammates because I’m about just getting my guys better. When I get to Miami, my only thing is to try to win a national championship every year.”

Abrams, a senior at Arlington Heights (Illinois) Montini Catholic, is a four-star prospect ranked as the No. 3 overall quarterback and No. 44 prospect regardless of position in the Class of 2027 according to the 247Sports composite ranking.

He is entering his third season as Montini Catholic’s starting quarterback after taking over that role midway through his sophomore season. The Broncos are a perfect 24-0 with Abrams as the starter and has won back-to-back Illinois state championships in the process.

Abrams over the past two seasons has thrown for 6,105 yards and 69 touchdowns against just nine interceptions. In 14 games as a junior, he completed 68.5% of his passes for 4,072 yards and 40 touchdowns against six interceptions while also running 82 times for 224 yards and another 10 touchdowns.

Abrams took a multi-day visit to the University of Miami earlier this week and told 247Sports following the visit that the Hurricanes did “an amazing job throughout the process with the limited time that they’ve had.”

“It definitely shows with the way that they’re recruiting me how effective they are when they’re recruiting me,” Abrams added. “It’s not just a bunch of spam text messages. They take the time to actually text me, which is important because I don’t want a garbage relationship. I want something real, so I appreciate the realness.”

Should Abrams remain true to his commitment, it will mark the third consecutive cycle Miami has signed a blue-chip quarterback. They signed fellow four-star signal callers Luke Nickel in the Class of 2025 and Dereon Coleman in the Class of 2026.

And, with that stacking of talent at the position, it might finally spark a movement where Miami can begin to utilize the quarterbacks they signed out of high school on the field.

The 2026 season will be Miami’s third consecutive campaign with a transfer quarterback serving as the starter. It was Cam Ward in 2024, Carson Beck in 2025 and now Darian Mensah this season.

This once again leaves Miami’s from its signing classes — in this case Judd Anderson, Nickel and Coleman — tasked with waiting their turn and competing among themselves to be the new backup quarterback.

Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal, speaking after spring practice Thursday, acknowledged the quarterback room is a “talented” one and that, “in a perfect world, you like to keep your program always going from within, with the high school ranks.”

His hope is that the quarterbacks they have brought in under his time leading the program are getting to a point where it could be feasible there in the not-too-distant future.

“It’s up to them,” Cristobal said, “and for us, it’s up to us and them together to develop to a point where we have confidence to go and play winning football. They’re off to a great start. Judd, with another year in the system, same thing with Luke. You can tell it’s just showing up, right? They’re quicker on their reads. The ball’s out. It’s more accurate. They anticipate better. They understand protections better. And Dereon’s a quick study. You’ve seen the way he throws the ball now. He is ubertalented.”

Abrams is the eighth commitment in Miami’s 2027 class. He joins five-star Miami Carol City wide receiver Nick Lennear, four-star Hollywood McArthur safety Jaylyn Jones, four-star Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons edge rusher Demarcus Deroche, four-star Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna wide receiver Ah’Mari Stevens, three-star McArthur cornerback Sherrod Gourdine, three-star Wellington Palm Beach Central offensive tackle Zaquan Linton and three-star Key West defensive lineman Josh Johnson.
