‘OBSOLETE’ contactless payment units at public toilets in a North Yorkshire town centre are set to be replaced.
Contactless payment units at two public conveniences in Whitby are set to be replaced by the town council at a cost of more than £1,600.
Whitby Town Council said that the existing 2G/3G units are becoming obsolete and require upgrading to ensure continued operation.
2G and 3G are the second and third generations, respectively, of mobile phone networks. 3G, introduced in 2003, added basic internet connectivity and they have been followed by 4G and 5G.
The government announced in December 2021 that it and the mobile industry had agreed to switch off 2G and 3G networks in the UK.
At a meeting earlier this month, town councillors considered a report on the replacement of contactless payment units at the Market Place and Abbey public conveniences.

Members were advised that Danfo (UK) Ltd had provided a quotation of £1,653.78 (+VAT) to install new 4G-enabled units.
At the full meeting, councillors voted to approve the quote received from Danfo (UK) Ltd for the replacement of contactless payment units at the Market Place and Abbey public convenience sites at a total cost of £1,653.78.
At the beginning of March, councillors also voted to approve the appointment of Engineering Installations Teesside Ltd to undertake the Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR) at the town council’s six public convenience sites at a total cost of £4,096.00 in accordance with the submitted quotation.
