MJF turned down several offers from WWE

AEW World Champion MJF confirmed a rumor about WWE legend Mick Foley wanting to have a comeback match against him. Foley was most known for his iconic WWE work as Mankind and Cactus Jack during the late 1990s, but he wrestled his final match back in 2012 in the Royal Rumble match. Foley’s last singles match was back in 2010 against Ric Flair in TNA Wrestling.

MJF admitted the rumors were true when discussing it on Late Night Grin with Joe Hulbert:

“Look, he’s talked about it openly. We sat down and we had a discussion of what (a singles match) would look like. It was a very good talk. I still think he’s a b**ch, but if whatever tirzepatide peptide he’s on allows him to lose some more weight, maybe he can still make a comeback. We’ll see what happens.”

The quote featured both a real comment of MJF revealing he had talks with Foley about a match and a character comment insulting the legend. MJF grew up a diehard WWE fan during the Attitude Era and hails from Long Island, where Foley has lived for decades. The match would have been a huge honor for MJF and AEW to have Foley wrestle his last match there.

What Mick Foley Said About MJF Match

MJF referenced that Foley has talked about the rumor in recent interviews. The rumor started years ago, but both men have started to finally share some insight into what actually happened. Health concerns from Foley at this stage of his life made him give up on the dreams.

Foley shared the following about his perspective on planning for the match:

“We did have a secret meeting, and he laid out a scenario that was really fascinating, so much so that I think he was the first guy I called when I was like, man, I think it’s over, I got a concussion doing almost nothing. I think that could’ve been really fun.

Obviously, he’s a super smart guy who had put some time into a storyline and I liked it, you know, when you feel yourself really going for something. It doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen, I mean, it definitely not going to happen, but at least I didn’t give up [in terms of] dropping weight.”

Foley praised MJF and discussed his genuine desire until health concerns made it impossible. However, this goal led to Foley dropping weight and getting into better shape for his life.

Foley Could Still Realistically Join AEW

AEW would have benefited from having such a beloved legend from WWE join the rival company to have his official retirement match there. However, Foley may still be able to join AEW in a non-wrestling role to still contribute.

Recent news saw Foley revealing he was letting his WWE Legends’ contract expire this year due to the company’s association with President Donald Trump. AEW could tempt Foley to make appearances in an ambassador role, like with Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat. Foley has praised AEW many times and clearly has a tight relationship with MJF to work a story together.
