One person is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a fire at a North Huron high school on Tuesday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Huron County say they responded to a fire at F. E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham just after 8 a.m. Emergency crews evacuated the school and extinguished the fire and the injured person was transported to a local hospital.
The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) declined an interview but a spokesperson said in a statement that a staff member and student were reported injured and are being treated in hospital. Students were safely relocated to nearby Maitland River Elementary School.
“We are assessing the damage that the fire caused in order to determine when students and staff can return to the school,” said Chera Longston. “Mental health support is being offered to both staff and students. We will continue to send updates as we receive additional information.”
The OPP said there will be an increased presence of emergency services around the school and are requesting the public avoid the area. Police are also asking anyone with video footage to not distribute it.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Huron OPP or Crime Stoppers.
