Police have asked motorists to avoid the area around the A66 Cannon Park after the incident

The A66 at Cannon Park has been closed in BOTH directions after a crash. Police are asking motorists to avoid the key Middlesbrough dual carriageway.

The incident, believed to involve a lorry which has been pulled over at the side of the road, happened shortly after 12.30pm today and there are already long tailbacks on the dual carriageway.

Cleveland Police initially released a statement saying: “The A66 westbound is currently closed at Cannon Park, Middlesbrough, due to a collision. Emergency services are on scene. Please avoid the area. Thank you for your patience in advance.”

Just minutes after they released a second statement which read: “The eastbound carriageway is now also closed.” One witness, who was on the scene at the time of the incident, told TeessideLive that the collision appeared to be between the lorry and a person.

A live map from the AA shows that traffic has been brought to a standstill in the area.

The A66 at Cannon Park remains closed after an earlier incident. Traffic remains heavy in the area with long tailbacks.

Delays eastbound are around eight minutes long, says AA Traffic.

Delays of eight minutes and delays increasing on A66 Eastbound between A1130 Middlesbrough Road and B1272 Hartington Road (Hartington Interchange). Average speed ten mph.

National Highways have categorized the incident ‘severe’

The National Highways have categorized the incident as ‘severe’. It says: “Normal traffic conditions are expected between 13:30 and 13:45 on 9 April 2026. There are currently delays of 10 minutes against expected traffic”

Delays now 27 minutes

AA Traffic is recording 27 minute delays now on the A66 after the collision earlier.

AA says:

Severe delays of 27 minutes and delays easing on A66 Westbound between B1541 Borough Road (Middlehaven Interchange) and A1032 Heywood Street (Cannon Park Interchange). Average speed five mph.

Delays are spreading further along the A66 – with congestion noted further westbound as this new AA Traffic map shows.

Police statement

Cleveland Police released a statement on the incident saying:

The A66 westbound is currently closed at Cannon Park, Middlesbrough, due to a collision.Emergency services are on scene. Please avoid the area.Thank you for your patience in advance.

Nine minutes later, the force released a second statement adding:

The eastbound carriageway is also now closed.

Ambulance service sent two crews to the scene

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A66 westbound in Middlesbrough shortly before 12.30pm this afternoon (9 April).We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader and an officer.

The AA live road service says: “Severe delays of 23 minutes and delays increasing on A66 Westbound between B1541 Borough Road (Middlehaven Interchange) and A1032 Heywood Street (Cannon Park Interchange). Average speed five mph.”
