Channel 4 has confirmed that one of its long-running game shows has been recommissioned.

Taskmaster, which stars Greg Davies and Alex Horne, has been renewed for six new series, the broadcaster said. Spin-offs New Year Treat and Taskmaster Champion of Champions will also return and the deal also includes full episodes on Channel 4’s YouTube channel for a UK audience.

The announcement comes just days before the start of the 21st series of the programme.

Greg, who takes on the role of the Taskmaster, was thrilled at the news. “I am delighted the comedian meat grinder remains open for business,” he said. “I look forward to gleefully keeping it fed with the help of a small, introverted man that I own.”

His show sidekick Alex Horne chimed in: “I’m pleased and quite stressed that I’ve got to come up with a lot more tasks for a lot more comedians but the thought of three more years in Greg’s deep embrace is soothing my little head.”

Tom Beck, head of live events and commissioning editor, said: “Taskmaster is the most creative, funny and frankly ludicrous show on telly; I’m delighted to enable their silly brilliance for another three years.”

Taskmaster – which started in 2015 – features five celebrities, who are usually comedians, undertaking quirky tasks and challenges that test their creativity and quick thinking.

Over the years, the contestants have been given a range of bizarre tasks, from singing to dogs and filling egg cups with their own tears to trying to get feathers into baths without touching them.

Alex oversees their efforts to complete the challenges, which are then judged by the Taskmaster Greg, who delivers the ultimate verdict.

A Taskmaster winner is later crowned and presented with a trophy shaped like Greg.

It returns for series 21 this month, with comedian, actor and writer Amy Gledhill and award-winning writer, director, and broadcaster Armando Iannucci among the line-up.

Presenter, broadcaster and Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page has also signed up for the contest this year, as has The Masked Singer and Celebrity Sabotage presenter Joel Dommett. Rounding out the cast is writer, actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani.

Taskmaster returns on Thursday April 9 at 9pm on Channel 4 and previous seasons are available to watch on Channel 4 streaming.
