A so-called “door kick challenge” shared amongst some youth through social media in Nelson has caused significant damage to a residential door and could result in criminal charges.

The Nelson Police Department (NPD) is investigating an incident involving youth participating in the so-called “door kick challenge” in the 800 block of Davis Street in Nelson, which resulted in significant damage to one residential door.

This reckless behaviour, often shared on social media, involves kicking or striking doors of homes and businesses, the NPD statement Tuesday morning explained.

“While it may be perceived as a prank, it can cause serious property damage, create fear for residents, and lead to criminal charges,” the statement read.

Police are reminding the public that this activity is not harmless and may result in the following criminal offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, including mischief, mischief under/over $5,000, trespassing at night and causing a disturbance.

Behaviour that disrupts the peace and safety of others may also result in charges, the NPD warned.

“In addition to criminal charges, youth involved may face civil liability, meaning they (and potentially their parents/guardians) could be responsible for covering the cost of repairs,” the police said.

The NPD said parents and guardians need to speak with their children about the risks and consequences of participating in social media trends that involve illegal or dangerous behaviour.

“What may seem like a joke can have serious legal and financial consequences,” said the NPD. “This type of activity can cause real fear for residents and will be treated seriously.”

Police are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Nelson Police Department (250-354-3919).
