Tax Day is here. How to check your IRS refund status if you’ve filed

Bergen County’s monthly tax increase is the same as the price of a pint of ice cream
Bergen County Administrator James Tedesco said the monthly tax increase for the average home is the same as the cost of a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Staff members handed out ice cream pints and spoons to the commissioners at the end of the budget presentation.
The Internal Revenue Service has begun accepting and processing federal tax returns for the 2025 filing season, with most refunds for electronically filed returns issued within about three weeks, the agency said.
The deadline to file has arrived, so here’s what you need to know if you already submitted your return.
When do IRS refunds start going out?
Refunds typically start going out in late January or early February. Taxpayers who e-file and choose direct deposit usually receive their money within 21 days, while those who mail paper returns and request checks can wait six to eight weeks or longer.
Some refunds will take more time. Under the PATH Act, refunds that include the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit cannot be issued until mid-February, regardless of when a return is filed.
How can you track your IRS refund?
Taxpayers can track the status of a refund beginning 24 hours after e-filing by using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go mobile app, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
To check a refund, filers need their Social Security number or ITIN, filing status and the exact refund amount claimed on the return. The tracking tool updates once a day, typically overnight. It is generally available around the clock but is briefly offline for maintenance between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Eastern time and during limited weekend windows.
Why do delays occur for tax returns?
Delays can occur if a return has errors, missing information or is flagged for identity verification or fraud review. In those cases, the IRS said, taxpayers will be contacted by mail if additional information is required.
When is tax day?
Wednesday, April 15 is traditionally known as “Tax Day” as the deadline to file income taxes. However, you can still request an extension on the IRS website.
