DETROIT — The Tigers have locked up the next face of their franchise, reaching an agreement Wednesday on an eight-year, $150 million contract extension with infielder Kevin McGonigle.

McGonigle’s deal begins next season and will ensure he is under team control through 2034. The contract will cover McGonigle’s final five seasons of club control and add three additional seasons, meaning the 21-year-old should spend the bulk of his prime seasons in a Tigers uniform.

McGonigle’s contact includes escalators that could bring the deal to a maximum value of $160 million.

McGonigle will earn the following salaries:
2027: $1 million
2028: $7 million
2029: $16 million
2030: $21 million
2031: $22 million
2032-34: $23 million

Escalators could increase his 2032 salary to $25 million, his 2033 salary to $26 million and his 2034 salary to $28 million. The contract includes a $14 million signing bonus and a $5 million assignment bonus each time it is transferred to another major-league club.

Drafted 37th overall in 2023, McGonigle has quickly ascended to becoming the sport’s No. 2 overall prospect. MLB’s top prospect, Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Konnor Griffin, signed a nine-year, $140 million extension last week. After skipping Triple A and making the Opening Day roster, McGonigle has already been arguably the most impactful position player on the Tigers’ roster, hitting .311 with a .417 on-base percentage 17 games into his career.
