Sicily’s first “Gay Street” will open in Palermo.

Palermo’s first gay street, and the first in Sicily, will open on June 1st. It will be located in one of the capital’s most iconic and historic neighborhoods, Vucciria, on a stretch of Via Argenteria. A banner will be displayed at the street’s entrance, reading in English: “Welcome to the Gay Street Palermo!”

The founders are the Bunker Club of Palermo, the European Gay Network of Barcelona, Canal G Onlus Italia, the Stop Homophobia Center of Palermo, with the contribution and collaboration of all the businesses on Via Argenteria that are part of Palermo’s Gay Street.

The street will feature a series of gay-friendly and gay-only businesses. Ignazio’s historic fruit stand, ‘lu Bruccularu,’ one of the symbols of Vucciria, has been in the same location for over 70 years. It will offer fruit with the gay stamp, a personal contribution to the nascent Gay Street. Then there will be the vintage shop The Queen di Ursula, where trans and gender-neutral people can create their own extravagant outfits. There’s also a travel agency, Epic Sicily, offering excursions specifically designed for the LGBTQ+ community, and the creative clothing workshop Rogato Bags.

The street will also feature the Librai della Vucciria, a sandwich shop offering gay street food, the Alkemie art gallery, two classic Palermo trattorias, and many other small businesses that are about to open. Palermo’s Gay Street will be twinned with its counterpart in Barcelona and has an official website www.gaystreetpalermo.it where you can find all the events and initiatives taking place from June 1st onwards.
