Nico Hulkenberg Hit With Suspended Stop-and-Go: Why His Bizarre Canadian GP Penalty Exposes a Broken Rulebook

The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix was completely chaotic from the very beginning. But the FIA stewards just handed out one of the strangest penalties we have seen in modern Formula 1. Nico Hulkenberg managed to run into major trouble before the lights even went out on Sunday. And his punishment has left a lot of fans scratching their heads.

The whole situation started during a very messy pre-race sequence. After an aborted start caused multiple formation laps, the starting procedure got complicated. According to official FIA Document 99, Hulkenberg was completely out of position as the grid approached Safety Car Line 1.

The Audi Revolut driver was reportedly very slow to get away, which caused Car 30 to pass him. Because of this delay, both cars ended up crossing the safety car line out of order.

Under the strict Formula 1 rulebook, if a driver fails to start the formation lap in the correct order, they are supposed to head straight into the pit lane to start the race. Hulkenberg completely ignored this step. The stewards’ report confirmed that Car 27 failed to enter the pits as required by the regulations. The governing body ruled this a direct breach of Article B5.6.4.

The Suspended Punishment For Hulkenberg

Normally, ignoring a formation lap protocol results in an immediate, race-ruining penalty. The rulebook dictates a mandatory stop-and-go penalty for this exact offense. But the stewards decided to go down a very unusual route.

Because Hulkenberg’s mistake didn’t actually delay the start of the race or mess up the overall grid order, the officials felt a full stop-and-go was extremely harsh. Instead of pulling him into the pits during the race, they imposed the penalty after the checkered flag and immediately suspended it.

According to the official document, this punishment is suspended until the final race of the 2026 Championship. Hulkenberg will only have to actually serve the stop-and-go if he commits another similar breach before the season ends.

On top of the looming threat, the German driver was also handed his first official reprimand of the season for failing to start the formation lap in the correct order. Suspended grid drops and fines happen all the time. But a suspended stop-and-go penalty is definitely a rare sight in the paddock. Hulkenberg escaped Montreal without an immediate time penalty, but he is now walking a very thin line for the rest of his campaign with Audi.
