Liverpool defender confirms summer exit

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams has confirmed his imminent departure.

Williams rose through the Anfield club’s academy ranks and was part of their FA Youth Cup-winning side which put Manchester City to the sword in 2019.

The centre-back made his senior debut for the Reds under Jurgen Klopp in a Carabao Cup third round victory over Lincoln City in September 2020.

He featured a further 18 times that season with 14 of them coming as starts due to an unprecedented injury crisis in the English champions’ backline.

But despite being part of the side which sealed a third place finish, Williams spent his final years on a series of loan spells both in the EFL and Scotland.

The 25-year-old announced in a social media post on Monday that he will leave Merseyside after 16 years when his contract expires next month.

“From signing as an 9-year-old boy, to leaving as a 25-year-old man, this club has let me fulfil things that dreams are made of,” Williams wrote on social media.

“It’s been an honour to wear this shirt, rub shoulders with legends and play for the greatest set of fans in the world.

“Thank you Liverpool, YNWA.”
