Supreme Court allows Vermont lawsuit against Meta to proceed

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont’s lawsuit against Meta can proceed.

The Supreme Court declined on Tuesday to hear a bid by Meta Platforms to avoid a lawsuit from the Vermont Attorney General.

The state is suing Instagram, claiming it violated state law intended to curb social media addiction.

Meta argues the state’s courts don’t have jurisdiction to review the case.

The Supreme Court’s allowing the case to move forward could impact cases brought by other states. Meta and YouTube are both fighting hundreds of lawsuits brought by school districts and attorneys general across the country.
