Former RSPB Scotland chief appointed to senior National Trust role

A former chief of the RSPB in Scotland has been appointed director of Conservation & Policy at the National Trust for Scotland.

Anne McCall will take up the role vacated by Stuart Brooks, who died in December 2025 after an illness, in August.

Ms McCall has been director of RSPB Scotland since 2017, where she spearheaded landscape conservation projects and wildlife protection schemes.

These include a countrywide programme of peatland restoration and many game-changing, landscape-scale conservation projects, including Cairngorms Connect and the Orkney Native Wildlife Project.

In addition to her nature conservation expertise, her role at RSPB has involved responsibility for the care of land, historic buildings and archaeological sites across the charity’s estate, which is comparable in size to that of the National Trust for Scotland.

Anne is also a qualified town planner and holds a degree in history and politics.

In her new role at the National Trust for Scotland, Anne will oversee all the charity’s national conservation functions, including buildings conservation, nature conservation, collections services, gardens and designed landscapes, archaeology, policy, environment and risk.

Chief executive Phil Long OBE said: “The National Trust for Scotland has one of the biggest and broadest conservation remits in Scotland and we are delighted to have found a candidate in Anne with the skills, experience and interests which match that so well.

“We look forward to welcoming her to our charity, where she will play a vital part in progressing our work to care for our places and enable all to enjoy them.”

Anne said: “I am honoured to be able to take on this unique role with such an extraordinary organisation. As a member of the National Trust for Scotland, I have long admired the scale and scope of what it delivers, and it will be my great privilege to contribute to that delivery.”
