Packers change Bo Melton’s position back to WR to start OTAs

After a season of having Bo Melton listed as a cornerback, the Green Bay Packers now officially list Melton as a wide receiver on the team’s roster — returning the versatile veteran to his original position to start OTAs.
Per Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com, Melton wore a white jersey with the rest of the offense’s players during Wednesday’s practice, and he ran individual drills with the wide receivers.
Deep at receiver and needing emergency depth at cornerback, the Packers began cross-training at cornerback last offseason, and he made the 53-man roster and remained listed as a cornerback throughout the 2025 season. However, Melton played no snaps from scrimmage at cornerback during the regular season while appearing on the field for 95 snaps on offense as a wide receiver and 195 on special teams — suggesting he was always a wide receiver first and emergency cornerback second. Learning a second position helped him stick on the roster as a versatile option for all three phases.
But it appears Melton will be heading back to offense in 2026. The Packers lost Romeo Doubs in free agency and traded away Dontayvion Wicks this offseason, lessening the log jam at receiver and opening the door for Melton to play a complementary role behind Christian Watson, Matthew Golden and Jayden Reed.
Melton’s value will always be versatility and special teams ability. Per Hodkiewicz, Melton remained a first-team option as a gunner covering punts during Wednesday’s practice.
Last season, Melton played in 16 games, catching four passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed five times for 35 yards and returned 19 kickoffs.
At receiver, Melton will be competing with Savion Williams, Skyy Moore, Isaiah Neyor, Jakobie Keeney-James, Will Sheppard, Brenden Rice and rookie J. Michael Sturdivant for a roster spot and playing time in 2026.
