Mike Myers says he’d ‘literally be nothing’ without Canada at Canadian Screen Awards

When we think of comedic talents, few people are more legendary than Canadian Mike Myers, from the Austin Powers franchise to Wayne’s World and Shrek, to name just a few. Among the Canadian Screen Awards presented on Sunday, Myers received the Academy Icon Award.

“I had a whole speech written about how much I love Canada, but I suspect some of you might be sick of hearing that, at this point,” Myers said. As the audience started to boo.

Instead, Myers used his award acceptance speech to thank the people he’s worked with throughout his career. In thanking his family, Myers got emotional, speaking about his parents, thanking them for moving to Canada and “stressing the importance of being silly.”

Among Myers’ collaborators he mentioned was Canadian Martin Short, whom he called “insanely generous” to him. Along with Eugene Levy and the late Catherine O’Hara, and John Candy.

He also thanked Scarborough, Ont., for teaching him “the three Fs. When to fight, when to be funny and when to flee.”

“Canada, … I’d literally be nothing without you,” Myers said to close his speech.
