Fire at NJ Transit operations center halts trains

A fire at NJ Transit’s Rail Operations Center in Kearny caused rail service to be suspended on 10 of the agency’s 11 rail lines for an hour Sunday afternoon.
Service on the North Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley, Atlantic City, Morris & Essex, Montclair-Boonton, Gladstone, Main, Bergen County, Port Jervis and Pascack Valley Lines was suspended in both directions agency alerts said.
Service resumed as of 1:15 p.m., a spokesperson said. However 30-minute rail delays were reported for the rest of the day, according to agency alerts.
Northeast Corridor trains were not affected because that line is controlled by Amtrak.
“There was a fire on the roof,” said Anjali Hemphill, an NJ Transit spokesperson. “Trains were stopped for about 60 min until it was safe for dispatchers to re enter. Trains are moving again.”
The rail operations center is located in NJ Transit’s larger Meadowlands Maintenance Complex property in Kearny.
The fire comes two days after an early morning fire between Penn Station New York and the Hudson River rail tunnels to New Jersey reduced NJ Transit and Amtrak service through the Friday evening rush and the weekend.
Work continued on that tunnel to repair fire damage through the weekend with a goal to reopen the north tube for the Monday morning commuter rush.
