Man arrested in Mount Airy after manhunt, charged with killing Virginia deputy

A man was arrested on Sunday after a days-long manhunt, with authorities saying he killed a sheriff’s deputy in Virginia.
According to the Carroll County Sheriff, the deputy was killed Friday night when conducting a welfare check at a home on Fancy Gap Highway about 20 miles outside of Mount Airy.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with the suspect, Michael Puckett. Authorities said Puckett fired at deputies, hitting both. Deputy Logan Utt was killed. The condition of the other deputy is unknown.
Puckett fled the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. The Mount Airy Police Department assisted in the search for Puckett.
Authorities found Puckett on Sunday. According to the North Carolina SBI, agents spotted Puckett with a drone as he was going door-to-door. Agents arrested Puckett as he was ringing the doorbell of another home.
Puckett was taken to the Surry County Detention Center in Dobson without bond. He’s expected to appear in court on Monday.
The Caroll County Sheriff’s Office thanked local law enforcement agencies for their help in their search for Puckett.
