Sources: Gary Bettman laying foundation for succession plan

Commissioner Gary Bettman gives his annual Stanley Cup State of the Union later this afternoon, and now, there is a potential new topic to discuss: a succession plan.
According to multiple sources, the commissioner, in conversations with members of the NHL’s Executive Committee, began laying the groundwork for his eventual exit from the current role. He turned 74 today, and is approaching his 34th anniversary on the job.
Bettman declined to comment.
What’s uncertain is the exact timeline. We will see how Bettman chooses to address this, if at all. He’s joked before that we’re not getting rid of him so fast. We’ll see how things proceed.
