Army will destroy WW2 bomb after almost 100 homes evacuated | ITV News

A bomb from the Second World War will be destroyed by the Army later today after it led to almost a hundred homes being evacuated in Coventry.
Locals in the Sandy Lane Business Park area were told to leave their homes at around 4 pm on Tuesday.
The bomb was found during demolition work at the business park and West Midlands Police confirmed those evacuated were being supported by Coventry City Council.
Emergency services are continuing to work alongside Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams.
Experts still need to perform a detailed assessment of the device before the controlled explosion. After the blast and a safety check, it is expected residents will be able to return to their homes.
A 100-metre cordon also remains in place on Wednesday following the discovery.
The full police statement reads: “This morning, a number of roads remain closed around the Sandy Lane Business Park in Coventry following the discovery of an unexploded WW2 bomb.”
The force continued: “The bomb was discovered during construction work at the business park in the Radford area at 2.55pm yesterday.
“For the public’s safety, a 100 metre cordon has been put in place which has resulted in 96 homes evacuated at this time and being supported by Coventry City Council where required.
“Work is ongoing with Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts to assess the device.
“We appreciate the co-operation of local residents, businesses and motorists as emergency services and EOD work through the safe disposal of the device.
“Our officers are working with partners to ensure the safety of everyone.”
