Why Bismack Biyombo, Kelly Olynyk, Mason Plumlee are on the Spurs but never play

The San Antonio Spurs are certainly one of the NBA’s tallest teams.

It starts with Victor Wembanyama, of course. Luke Kornet, the regular backup center, helps the height equation, too. And then it’s boosted by three veteran big men who pretty much never play: Bismack Biyombo, Kelly Olynyk and Mason Plumlee.

Throughout the NBA Finals, it’s likely that you’ll see those familiar faces on the bench. Each has had a quality career at the highest level, but they aren’t contributors now for the Spurs.

Instead, they ride the bench, are along for the vibes and occasionally see late-game cameos when the action isn’t close.

It’s fascinating that the Spurs have all three, that’s for sure.

Why do the Spurs have Bismack Biyombo, Kelly Olynyk and Mason Plumlee?

While this isn’t a question that has been asked specifically of head coach Mitch Johnson, it seems this all goes back to Wemby.

The big fella was coming off a scary end to last season with his blood clot issues, so the Spurs brought in a bunch of big guys as insurance.

They also likely wanted a lot of length to work against him in practice.

And in reality, Biyombo brings the defensive wisdom, Olynyk brings the shooting big wisdom and Plumlee brings the interior, rim-attacking wisdom.

Together, they can help make Wembanyama better, and that’s what counts for the Spurs.
