LETTER: City should hold public consultation on landfill

‘In addition to the landfill, why don’t we explore the potential sale of our PUC holdings?’ a reader says
To the editor,
Re: “Sault trashes proposal to privatize city landfill, composting”
Legitimate concerns regarding jobs, future costs, environmental protection and other issues need to be explored, but given the huge costs involved in continuing to operate our landfill and the significant potential savings of a privatized model, why are we not at least issuing an RFP and engaging in public consultations?
Given the sorry state of our roads, the economic uncertainty in our community and the lack of new business development/tax revenue, we should be considering all options that improve our city’s financial position.
In addition to the landfill, why don’t we explore the potential sale of our PUC holdings? Such commitments do not require the city to privatize the landfill or sell the PUC, to be sure.
In fact, a legitimate review of these options, along with community consultation, could lead to conclusions that we are best-served by the status quo.
We should not fear a deeper dive into the options in front of us . . . we should welcome it.
