Carmel Cinemas Reopens Year After Closing In Putnam County

One big screen has made a triumphant return in Putnam County after a little more than a year.

More than a year after the former Carmel Cinema closed its doors, the movie theater at 150 Route 52 in the Carmel ShopRite Plaza has officially reopened as Carmel Cinemas under the new ownership of Box Office Cinemas.

The theater welcomed moviegoers back on Friday, June 5, marking the return of a local entertainment staple that had been shuttered since May 2025.

Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne stopped by the theater on opening day to meet with its new manager and congratulate staff as they reopened the facility.

“I was especially happy to hear that many of the theater’s longtime employees have returned, and that popular programs like senior discounts and Discount Tuesdays will continue,” Byrne said.

The reopening comes just over a year after the previous operators announced the theater would close after 15 years in business.

As previously reported by Daily Voice, Carmel Cinema’s owners revealed in April 2025 that the theater’s final day would be May 29, 2025, thanking customers for “allowing us to experience the magic of movies with you these past 15 years.”

The closure had prompted an outpouring of disappointment from residents at the time. Now, though, the business is once again bringing movies back to the area.

According to its website, opening weekend offerings include “Backrooms,” “Masters of the Universe,” “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and “Scary Movie 6.”

Byrne said he also discussed future partnerships with theater management, including the possibility of sensory-friendly screenings for children on the autism spectrum and families with special needs through the county’s ThinkDIFFERENTLY initiative.

A formal grand opening celebration is expected in the coming weeks, but officials said that the theater is already open for business.
