Cabo Verde workers allowed to down tools for World Cup debut against Spain

Cabo Verde is buzzing ahead of its World Cup debut against Spain next week. So much so that its Council of Ministers signed a resolution for “state employees and agents, public institutes and local authorities” not to work from 13:00 on Monday, June 15. Something akin to a national holiday, although private-sector workers will still have to fend for themselves if they want to watch the match.
The match takes place at 3pm Cape Verde time (6pm in Spain). Ulisses Correia e Silva, Cape Verde’s prime minister, called the measure “exceptional for an exceptional moment,” marking the Blue Sharks’ first appearance at a tournament of this level.
Cape Verde comprises an archipelago of just over 4,000 square kilometers and has a population of around 530,000 inhabitants. It is the second-smallest country in this edition of the World Cup, only larger than Curaçao.

Cape Verde president to attend Atlanta game
The president of the Republic of Cape Verde, José María Neves, has been visiting the United States this week “to support Cape Verde’s participation in the World Cup and to strengthen ties with Cape Verdean communities in that country,” according to the press service of the African nation’s authorities.
Neves’ visit will culminate this Monday in Atlanta, Georgia, where the president will attend his national team’s opening match against Spain. The team coached by Bubista continues to train at its camp in Tampa, Florida.
