Gustavo Alfaro, the Paraguay coach, reasoned the defeat was due to the “complexity” of the U.S. approach. He said after the game:

Resilience became a hallmark of Paraguay’s World Cup qualifying campaign, rallying from behind to defeat Argentina and Venezuela on home soil and rescuing a point in Colombia after trailing by two goals.
They will need to show that dogged fight tonight to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
