Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued for over 10 million in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch active until 8 p.m. ET for much of Ohio, including Columbus, along with southwest Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, and the majority of West Virginia.
Covering more than 10.3 million residents, this watch warns of rapidly intensifying storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail, and dangerous downpours.
Anyone within the watch area should stay weather-aware through the afternoon and early evening, ensuring multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts as these lines of storms sweep eastward.

Multiple injuries reported after bus overturns on New York State Thruway in Plattekill
New York State Police are responding to a passenger bus rollover on the New York State Thruway in the town of Plattekill in Ulster County.
Officials report that no life-threatening injuries have occurred, with injured passengers transported to local hospitals or evaluated at the scene, while roughly 17 non-injured individuals were taken to a nearby reunification center.
The incident has caused significant traffic backups—about four miles southbound and three miles northbound—as heavy tow crews work to clear the vehicle while one lane remains open in each direction.
FOX Weather has reached out to authorities to determine if weather played a role in the rollover. According to the FOX Forecast Center, severe storms hammered Ulster County earlier this morning, dropping heavy rain across the area.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the region as the response and state police investigation continue.

Analysis: Ingredients align across eastern U.S. to fuel severe storms and flash floods
An unusually potent combination of atmospheric dynamics is coming together today, setting off widespread severe weather from the Ohio Valley straight through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Muggy, tropical air with dew points sitting in the upper 60s and 70s is providing plenty of instability, while intense mid-level winds of 40 to 50 knots (roughly 45–60 mph) create the spin needed to organize storms into dangerous structures.
As daytime heating taps into this volatile setup, initial supercells will give way to large storm clusters capable of blasting straight-line damaging winds, isolated large hail, and even a few spin-up tornadoes.
At the same time, extreme atmospheric moisture is priming the region for a major flash flood setup. With precipitable water levels soaring well above average, storm cores will be locked and loaded, capable of dumping torrential rainfall rates of 2 inches per hour or more.
As these lines track east ahead of an approaching cold front, the sheer volume of water falling on saturated ground will quickly overwhelm urban drainage systems, sending rapid runoff spilling into streets, low-lying highways, and flood-prone underpasses across the Megalopolis.

A significant severe weather event is unfolding across the eastern U.S., placing 116 million people under the threat for severe weather and dangerous flash flooding.
The danger begins with an initial round of thunderstorms moving over New Jersey, southern New York, and southern New England.
While mostly bringing gusty winds and downpours, this morning activity sets the stage for a much more intense afternoon event as a main line of thunderstorms develops from the upper Ohio Valley into western New York.
Tracking east through the day, these storms will reach the heavy-traffic I-95 corridor during or just after the evening rush hour, bringing widespread damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a threat of tornadoes—particularly across western New York and eastern Pennsylvania.
Compounding the severe weather is a dangerous and widespread flash flood threat driven by extreme atmospheric moisture.
Rain rates could surge up to 2.5 inches per hour—nearly half of many cities’ average rain for the entire month of July—falling directly onto soil already saturated from downpours over the weekend.
In highly vulnerable areas like North Jersey, as little as one inch of rain over a six-hour span could easily trigger rapid runoff and dangerous flooding.
The main line is projected to hit the I-95 megalopolis between 6 and 8 p.m. before finally clearing offshore around midnight.
