Watch: Why Baker Mayfield is an early NFL MVP

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is putting up MVP numbers in 2025.
How is he doing it?
Thanks in part to new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard and rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka, Mayfield has thrown down the field better and more often than just about any quarterback in the NFL this season.
The first play in the video above showcases the Mayfield-to-Egbuka connection getting off the ground straight away in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, with this 25-yard go-ahead touchdown.
Play 2 in the video showcases how the Buccaneers’ entire offensive system challenges safeties and puts them in conflict.
The third play shows the Bucs introducing a slight wrinkle to their formation, giving Mayfield and Egbuka a different look.
Mayfield’s outstanding production downfield this season is a reminder of how many things need to work together to make a deep passing attack work. Not only does the quarterback need to be accurate and aggressive, but the play caller needs to dial up ways to create advantageous one-on-one situations and the receivers have to win those chances.
Tampa Bay’s vertical passing game is a well-designed, well-executed system that might keep Mayfield in the MVP conversation if this continues.
