Rift Valley fever outbreak continues rise in Senegal

In a follow-up on the Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak in Senegal, 18 additional confirmed cases were reported in the past 24 hours.
The Ministère de la Santé et de l’Hygiène publique reports 229 confirmed cases from six regions—Saint-Louis (206), Matam (10), Louga (7), Fatick (4), Dakar (1) and Kaolack (1).
The number of fatalities in the outbreak remain at 21.
At the invitation of the Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, the key stakeholders involved in the response to the Rift Valley Fever (RVF) epidemic met this Saturday, October 18, to evaluate the actions taken on the ground, three weeks after the deployment of interventions.
The deployment of teams from the central level, particularly the surge and supervision missions, combined with the sustained efforts of local stakeholders, has resulted in significant progress. No new deaths have been reported in the past five days, reflecting an encouraging stabilization of the situation. Early detection of cases is now effective, contributing to better control of the epidemic.
At the end of the discussions, several recommendations were made to strengthen the response. These include:
• intensifying actions in the animal sector, with increased surveillance and vaccination of livestock;
• continuing interventions carried out by the National Hygiene Service and veterinary services;
• strengthening communication, mosquito net availability, as well as community surveillance and early case detection.
