Legendary sportscaster Bryant Gumbel hospitalized after medical emergency

Legendary sportscaster Bryant Gumbel has been hospitalized following a “medical emergency,” according to a report from TMZ.

The report states that Gumbel is at a hospital in New York City after being transported there Monday night.

TMZ spoke with a family member who said that Bryant Gumbel is “okay” but did not provide any further details.

The 77-year-old Gumbel is the former host of the “Today” show on NBC. He also previously hosted HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” for 29 years.

“The show tried to do some things in sports journalism that no one else was doing,” Bryant Gumbel told the Associated Press in 2023. “I think it was one of the few avenues that could honestly explore issues without having to worry about ratings or sponsorships or relationships.

“I’ve been on the other side of that coin. I’ve worked for networks who were what they would call now the ‘broadcast partner’ of a sports entity. And you’d only be a fool to think you can follow any story wherever it wants if it collides with that relationship. Life doesn’t work that way.”

Gumbel’s older brother, Greg Gumbel, died last year after a battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.

Greg was also a legendary sportscaster, known for his coverage of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Super Bowl and plenty of other major sporting events.
