Purdue basketball vs Oakland live updates, score: Trey Kaufman-Renn won’t make season debut

No. 1 Purdue basketball (1-0) hosts Oakland (0-1) in the wake of Fletcher Loyer’s career night in its opener against Evansville. The Golden Grizzlies lost their opener at Michigan.

We will have score updates and highlights throughout, so please remember to refresh.

The Golden Grizzlies deploy a 2-3 matchup zone that sometimes looks like a 1-3-1 as they rotate through. The Boilermakers were 2 for 11 on 3-pointers before a corner C.J. Cox 3. Michigan shot 19 for 35 in a 121-78 win over the Golden Grizzlies.

The Boilermakers haven’t pulled ahead quite yet. They’re shooting just 36%, but have held Oakland to 26%, including a pair of airballs on one possession.

C.J. Cox returns to the game and immediately commits a foul, but his health is the key here.

Oakland took a 3-0 lead, but the Boilermakers responded, led by point guard Braden Smith. The All-American guard has five points, making a pair of shots, a rebound and an assist.

An official blew play dead as Oakland was getting into its offense. Then C.J. Cox was talking with trainers before and holding a towel over his face to stop the bleeding from a cut before walking up the tunnel 45 seconds into the game.

Gicarri Harris checked into the game for him.

It’s a military appreciation game for the Boilermakers, which means the coaches are donning green hoodies with a big, black ‘P’ on them with gold trim.

Slow to the draw with snapping a photo, but Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn had a conversation with Oakland coach Greg Kampe before tonight’s game as teams came out for pregame warmups.

The first five for the Boilermakers will be Braden Smith, C.J. Cox, Fletcher Loyer, Jack Benter and Oscar Cluff.

Trey Kaufman-Renn warmed up for Friday’s game, and was considered a game-time decision despite being listed as questionable on the injury report. He was considered out for the second straight game to start the season after he came out for pregame warmups in the same hoodie he wore Tuesday.

It’s been quite a development for the Boilermakers to have Jack Benter. He got specialized training this summer, which allowed him to grow into a rotation role this season. Little did he know he’d start the opener for the injured Trey Kaufman-Renn.

The Boilermakers’ big man was not out for early shootaround or post warm-ups, Nathan Baird reports.

Those from the Region, Northwest Indiana, stick together, or so Robbie Hummel thought. He introduced himself to Gary’s Koron Davis before Alabama A&M played at IU on Wednesday. Hummel is calling Purdue’s game tonight, as he did Tuesday night.

Here’s why that conversation made him feel old:

Purdue star forward Trey Kaufman-Renn will be a game-time decision for tonight’s game against Oakland, a source told IndyStar’s Nathan Baird. Kaufman-Renn did not play in the season opener on Tuesday and was listed as questionable on the Purdue injury report three hours before tip-off.

Nathan Baird, IndyStar: Purdue 89-61

“The Boilermakers will try to assert themselves on the boards more in Game 2, with or without Trey Kaufman-Renn.”

Sam King, Journal & Courier: “This is an incredibly tough stretch for Oakland, which opens the season at three consecutive top 10 teams. Michigan did a number on the Grizzlies Monday night. Expect Purdue to rebound better than it did against Evansville and follow Michigan’s lead, with or without Trey Kaufman-Renn.”
