LOUISVILLE, Ky.— A dominant 4-1 victory over Virginia secured North Carolina field hockey it’s ninth straight ACC Championship and the 28th in program history. Two goals from tournament MVP Dani Mendez led the way for UNC to once again assert itself as the dominant force in the conference.
The Tar Heels (19-1), who seem to be hitting their stride at the perfect time, seized control of this one early and never looked back. Mendez’s opening goal came in the fourth minute of play before she and Charly Bruder had two more unanswered to wrap up the game before it was half way to finished.
Holding a 3-1 lead at the half, Carolina locked down the defensive end even tighter. The Heels did not allow a singular shot from the Cavaliers after the break.
True freshman Reese Anetsberger, assisted by Mendez, put the final nail in the coffin just one minute into the second half.
Merritt Skubisz started in goal and made three saves in the first half before giving way to Katie Wimmer, who held the Cavs scoreless for the final 30 minutes.
History has become routine for this North Carolina program. The 28th all-time ACC title is more than all of the other teams have won combined. Nine championships in a row is by far the longest streak in the conference’s history and the 71 total wins nearly laps the field.
UNC has won more titles since the beginning of the 2020s than any other active ACC institution has all-time.
