Nationwide issue key two-month warning over £50 bonus payments for all customers

A crucial deadline has been confirmed for Nationwide Building Society customers entitled to a £50 bonus payment. As previously reported, a one-off £50 payment was made last year by Nationwide to more than 12m of its customers.

This money was distributed as part of its Big Nationwide Thank You initiative, a gesture of gratitude to loyal customers following the building society’s successful acquisition of Virgin Money. All payments to eligible customers now have been made, either directly into bank accounts or sent as cheques through the post, but an important deadline is looming for the latter.

Those who received cheques must cash them in by January 1, 2026 to secure their payment. With the date now less than two months away, Nationwide has clarified what happens if customers have not cashed their cheques by the deadline, reports The Mirror.

A spokesperson said all Big Thank You cheques must be paid in by the start of the new year to ensure customers do not miss out on the payment and added: “Any enquiries from customers who have been unable to deposit their cheque by January 1, 2026 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.” All other payments were made directly into either a current account, an instant access or a limited access savings account in the eligible customer’s name.

Who was eligible for Nationwide’s £50 bonus payment?

To be eligible for the one-off payment, people had to be a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024 – and also still be a member when the payments were issued. In the 12 months to the end of September 2024, they also needed to either have had:

  • At least one qualifying transaction on their Nationwide current account or savings account, or

  • At least £100 in total in one or more of their Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or

  • Owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.

Another eligible group was those who switched to any Nationwide current account between July 1 and September 30, 2024, using the Current Account Switch Service.
