Report: Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox expected to debut Saturday vs. Pelicans

Already off to a hot start this season, the San Antonio Spurs could be getting a major boost to their lineup this weekend.

All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox is expected to make his season debut Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans after missing the start of the year with a hamstring injury, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Friday.

Fox suffered the hamstring injury in the off-season and has reportedly been ramping up his workload this week in preparation for a weekend debut, per Charania.

The 27-year-old guard has only played 17 games in a Spurs uniform since being acquired in a trade from the Sacramento Kings ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline.

In that time, he averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a tendon in his left hand in mid-March — an injury he had suffered during training camp while still playing for Sacramento.

Because of injuries to both him and Victor Wembanyama last year, the two Spurs stars have only suited up for five games together.

Fox, a native of New Orleans, La., was drafted by the Kings fifth overall in 2017. Over his eight NBA seasons, the former All-NBA guard has averaged 21.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.4 steals.

He’ll enter a Spurs lineup that has gone 5-2 in the early portion of the season and sits fifth in the Western Conference.
