UFC VEGAS 111 ‘BONFIM VS. BROWN’ PLAY-BY-PLAY UPDATES

UFC Vegas 111: Final Thoughts

Well, no one is going to say “Where we you during UFC Vegas 111?” But the much maligned fight card delivered a lot of action with all, but four fights ending via stoppage.

In the main event Gabriel Bonfim was picking Randy Brown apart on the feet, landing hard leg kicks (inside and out) and countering when Brown got too close. In the second round he reacted quickly to Brown ducking his head and scored a big knee KO. Brown complained, but that was a fine stoppage. Bonfim now has a legitimate argument for a big name fight at Welterweight.

In the co-main event Joseph Morales styled on Matt Schnell and baited him into a fight ending guillotine choke. And he did all that in less than three minutes.

Before Uros Medic made even shorter work of Muslim Salikhov. He glanced a kick off the King of Kung Fu’s dome and then ended him with a straight left and follow up ground strikes.

Before that Chris Padilla crushed Ismael Bonfim with knees to the body and then ground and pound.

Christian Leroy Duncan opened the main card with a wild KO of the previously undefeated Marco Tulio. Duncan was extremely aggressive and showed improved grappling in that fight, before getting the finish due in part to one of his patented spinning attacks.

The finishes on the Prelims card included Josh Hokit blasting through Max Gimenis in less than a minute, Daniel Marcos choking Miles Johns to sleep and Zachary Reese tapping out Jackson McVey, also by a choke.

The decisions were Jamall Emmers dominating and exhausting Hyder Amil on the ground, Raoni Barcelos taking a razor thing decision over Ricky Simon (in a great fight), Jacqueline Cavalcanti piecing up Marya Bueno Silva on the feet and Denise Gomes shutting out Tecia Pennington.

Gabriel Bonfim vs. Randy Brown

Official decision: Gabriel Bonfim def. Randy Brown by KO (knee), round 2 (1:40)

Round 2: Bonfim lands more of those leg kicks to start the second round. They come close in a clinch and Bonfim lands a big knee that floors Brown. The referee swoops in and calls it there! Brown is up and complaining. He was definitely out for a second, but recovered very quickly. That’s a fair stoppage, though. Bonfim gets the unexpected KO finish in his debut main event.

Round 1: They exchange leg kicks early, with Bonfim landing the better ones. Brown tries to attack the body with kicks, but Bonfim was able to mostly block them. Brown is really trying to get close and brawl, but Bonfim has made him pay for that with some nice counters. Bonfim lands a very nice inside leg kick that really buckles Brown. Brown is struggling to get his timing and land anything decent on Bonfim. Bonfim lands another hard kick, an outside leg kick this time. Brown storms forwards and misses on a flying knee.

10-9 Bonfim, in a round spent entirely on the feet.

Matt Schnell vs. Joseph Morales

Official decision: Joseph Morales def. Matt Schnell by submission (guillotine), round 1 (2:54)

Round 1: Morales lands a nice right hand, but Schnell is able to turn that into a takedown. Morales is very lively on the bottom. He scrambles, goes for an ankle and then manages to get on top — in side control. Morales drops some elbows, but Schnell does well to deny him space. Morales then locks on an arm. He goes for a kimura and then transitions to a modified crucifix. Schnell turns and converts the crucifix into a tight guillotine. He taps out.

Chris Padilla vs. Ismael Bonfim

Official decision: Chris Padilla def. Ismael Bonfim by TKO (ground and pound), round 2 (4:30)

Round 2: Padilla takes the center again and measures some nice shots at Bonfim. Bonfim responds with some power shots, though. Padilla manages to land a big knee to the body that momentarily crumbles Bonfim. Bonfim looks very tired after that. Padilla manages to knee him in the ribs again and Bonfim goes down in pain. Bonfim is very hurt on the ground. Padilla gets side control and lands ground and pound. Bonfim rolls over. The referee takes a long time to wave this off. Finally he comes in and gets Padilla off him.

Round 1: Padilla manages to suck up a lot of time in this round holding Bonfim on the fence. He lands some knees, but not anything with a serious chance of hurting Bonfim. Bonfim gets some separation at the end of the round and is able to wing some offense at Padilla, some of it hurts. Padilla did enough with the rest of the round to win it, though.
