MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — During a news conference on Saturday, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Deputy Devin Jaramillo died on Friday after responding to “a minor traffic crash” in the Kendall District.

Cordero-Stutz said a man — who the M-DSO later identified as Steven David Rustrian– was involved in the crash, got into a fight with Jaramillo, disarmed him, and used his service weapon to shoot him several times.
Rustrian, 21, of Miami-Dade’s South Miami Heights neighborhood, then “entered his own vehicle and took his own life,” Cordero-Stutz said. “Good citizens who did see what happened called 911.”

The shooting was shortly after 3:50 p.m. at Southwest 122 Avenue and 128 Street, near the Florida Turnpike, in southwest Miami-Dade County’s Three Lakes neighborhood, according to deputies.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel took Jaramillo to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he died, according to deputies. He was 27. Cordero-Stutz described him a a homegrown hero.

“Devin was an amazing officer, hard working … He is what we call a legacy kid because his father was on the job for so many years,” Cordero-Stutz said. “He was strong, he was a helper, he was a supporter.”
Sources told Local 10 News Reporter Glenna Milberg on Friday that Jaramillo’s father, David Jaramillo, was a retired M-DSO detective who had served as the president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association.

Cordero-Stutz said there was “a second subject” in custody who was involved in the traffic crash. M-DSO later announced in a news release that “he was released, and no formal charges were filed.”
Deputies and police officers arrived at the hospital on Friday afternoon. Some hugged. There were tears. A group of motormen escorted an ambulance transporting Jaramillo’s body in a flag-draped casket to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A sea of red and blue lights filled the street as hundreds of members of the law enforcement community gathered outside to pay their respects on Friday night.
On Saturday afternoon, there was a procession from the medical examiner’s office to the Caballero Rivero Little Havana funeral home at 3344 SW 8 St.
